  11.                           INTRODUCTION TO QED

  14.      QED is a fast, and easy-to-use text-editor suitable for a variety of
  15. text editing purposes.  Unlike other programs of this type, QED is not
  16. meant strictly for programmers.  QED also offers a variety of text
  17. formatting tools, and can be configured to behave in a variety of ways. 
  18. The beginner can start using QED immediately, however underneath the easy
  19. to use interface lies a powerful command mode language, ARexx interfacing,
  20. macro capabilities, keyboard definitions, and much more.

  22.      QED is not a word-processor.  You use a word-processor when you are
  23. concerned with the printed result, but you use a text editor when the
  24. contents of the file is whats important.  QED never inserts any mysterious
  25. control codes in a file unless you put them there!  And files created
  26. within QED can be used by any program which can read ASCII files.  This
  27. includes compilers, telecommunication services, ARexx, the CLI batch file
  28. mechanism, etc.

  30.      Word-processors are typically paragraph oriented, while text editors
  31. are typically line oriented.  Word-processors terminate each paragraph with
  32. an end-of-paragraph marker, while text editors terminate each line of text
  33. with an end-of-line marker.

  104. ABOUT THIS MANUAL
  105.  
  106.      Writing a manual is always one of the most difficult aspects of
  107. putting together a piece of software.  The problem is trying to document
  108. features in such a way that the information is clear to the less
  109. experienced user, yet useful to the professional, and technical person.
  110.  
  111.      Writing the documentation for QED has been a particularly difficult
  112. task.  At first glance it appears to be a relatively simple text editor,
  113. which is intentional.
  114.  
  115.      Then upon closer inspection you will notice that many of the menu
  116. items are context sensitive.  For example, "Save As..." under the "Project"
  117. menu can be used to save a file, save a marked block of text, or save a
  118. marked column of text.  It turns out that many of the features in the menu
  119. items can be limited to a marked block of text, and in some cases, to a
  120. marked column.
  121.  
  122.      It is doubtful that all of the features available from the pull-down
  123. menus could have fit if separate items were listed for all the possible
  124. combinations.  So instead of cluttering the menus with hundreds of items,
  125. and keyboard combinations, I felt a cleaner appearance was preferrable,
  126. and easier for you to learn.

  128.      If we look a little closer, it turns out that QED is not a menu
  129. driven program at all, but a command driven program with a powerful command
  130. set, and macro capabilities.

  132.      The bottom line is that while the program has been designed to be easy
  133. to use, there is much more to the program then is apparent from the
  134. pull-down menus.  As a consequence, some of the information in this manual
  135. is meant for the technical user, and cannot realistically be simplified
  136. into terminology which can be understood by the new user.

  138.      It is strongly recommended that you read through most of the manual
  139. before making use of the program.  This manual assumes you are familiar
  140. with using the Amiga, and Amiga terminology.  If not, you should at least
  141. read the user's manual which was shipped with your computer system.
